Boy, oh boy! 2019 is already shaping to be one heck of a year for Disney! With mostly remakes and sequels coming soon to theaters near you, we’re looking forward to the releases with varying degrees of enthusiasm. Below is our list of 2019 movies from the House of Mouse from least to most anticipated. To keep our ratings from getting muddled by franchise love, we’ve left out Captain Marvel, Star Wars IX, and Avengers. Which remakes, reimaginings, and adaptations are you most looking forward to this year?
Penguins, April 17
Just in time for Earth Day, Disneynature will release the full-length film, Penguins, featuring an Adélie penguin in a coming-of-age story. Steve, the protagonist penguin, must overcome the dangers of life in the Arctic to find a mate and build a life for himself. Disneynature films are always gorgeous, but we’ll wait for this one to come out on home streaming.
Artemis Fowl, August 9
Based on the young adult novel of the same name, Artemis Fowl premieres in theaters in early August. We hear the plot is pretty true to the book, so that’s a big thumbs up from us since the book was so widely well received. On the other hand, A Wrinkle in Time, another YA novel, is iconic in its own right but tanked at the box office. Fingers crossed this adaption does well enough to warrant the making of the subsequent seven books in the series!
Dumbo, March 29
Released way back in 1941, Dumbo has some catching up to do! The overtly racist crows need to go, and we hope the film gets a modern-day happy day ending. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus retired all their elephants to a dedicated elephant sanctuary in 2016 after public outcry and criticism. The CGI baby elephant is both adorable and borderline uncanny-valley-creepy, but we’re fully expecting Mrs. Jumbo’s son to soar straight into our hearts.
Aladdin, May 24
A whole new world, a new fantastic point of view! Aladdin gets a whole new point of view with live-action treatment in yet another reimaging of an animated classic. We’re looking forward to seeing director Guy Ritchie’s take on the beloved Arabic folktale. Can Will Smith fill the late great Robin Williams’ pointed genie slippers or will he be a big blue bust? We will definitely queue up to watch the latest rendition in theaters!
Frozen 2, November 22
We can’t….let it go! We’ve been waiting for a sequel to Frozen for several years now, and we still have to wait until the end of 2019 for Frozen 2. The original gang is all featured in the sequel, and they set out on an adventure in the forest, but little else is known about the film. Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel reprise their voice-acting roles as Anna and Elsa, and we couldn’t be more excited!
Toy Story 4 June 21
We’re super, super excited for Toy Story 4! Toy Story took the number one spot in our ranking of top ten Pixar movies blog, and now we’re looking forward to a FOURTH installment coming out in June. Not only are we eagerly anticipating the old gang getting back together, but there’s also a whole new zany character to get to know and love, Forky! We have no doubt TS4 will be another mega hit for Disney, and we hope it tells just as powerful a story as the previous three.
The Lion King July 19
Just take our money! Take all our money because we have been waiting for the computer-animated reimaging since a remake was confirmed in 2016. Directed by Jon Favreau and starring the voice talents of legends and iconoclasts such as Beyoncé, Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and James Earl Jones, this movie is destined to be epic. Even the soundtrack, though as yet unheard by audiences, is hotly anticipated. Simba just can’t wait to be King, and we just can’t wait for The Lion King to roar into theaters on July 19.
Whether you see Penguins, Aladdin or The Lion King, odds are one way or another you’ll be spending some time (and money) to see a Disney film in 2019. The House of Mouse produces quality films that we’re looking forward to watching, either at home or in theaters as soon as possible!
