3Doodler is giving Star Trek the next generation treatment.
For Trekies who have always dreamed of designing their own Star Trek items, you can finally make it so.
The 3Doodler, a 3D printing pen that found success on Kickstarter back in 2013, has returned to the crowdfunding platform with a special treat for Star Trek fans. As part of the “3Doodler Limited Star Trek 3D Pen Sets” Kickstarter campaign, fans will be able to pledge to receive up to 6 unique Star Trek themed pens, each engraved with the iconic Star Trek logo and a unique “division” signature based on the pen. The pens are officially sanctioned by CBS Consumer Products and are based on both The Original Series and The Next Generation.
For those who have never heard of a 3D printing pen, it’s exactly what it sounds like. Users print a tube of plastic out of the tip of the pen that will retain its shape in any direction, enabling the creation of 3D objects. The original 3Doodler Kickstarter was a massive success, with $2,344,134 raised total. Considering the goal of the campaign was only $30,000, it clearly illustrated a demand for the product in the consumer market. Since then, 3D pens have become relatively popular, with other manufacturers designing their own takes on the product ever since.
The Star Trek 3Doodler pens also come with a few extras to further utilize the Star Trek license. More specifically, each set comes with a Star Trek engraved leather pouch and step-by-step instructions to create items and sculptures from the series. Other extras include extra packs of plastic, a mini spanner, and an unblocking tool.
Each Star Trek 3D Doodler set is available for a $99 pledge. However, the price per set decreases the more you pledge, with $450 ensuring shipment of all 6 pen sets. These pens are exclusive to this Kickstarter campaign, as the retail versions will only come in a single color and contain no unique engravings. For those who already have a 3Doodler, a project kit containing the tools needed to make the Star Trek themed items can be purchased as a standalone product. This will be available for $29.99 at retail, though backers who pledge $24.99 will receive the kit as well.
It’s important to note that Kickstarter is a crowdfunding platform and not a preorder page, so exercise due caution when pledging. That said, the people behind this project have a reputable track record, and this campaign is part of the recent launch of Kickstarter Gold. As the project has already reached it’s (albeit low) goal of $1,701, backers at least don’t have to worry about the project failing.
Even if the 3D Doodler pen doesn’t interest you, we recommend all Star Trek fans take a look at the page regardless. The hilariously over-the-top fan service is not to be missed.
