Best Waluigi Games Header

The best Waluigi games, practically by default

So… are we stuck in a weird dream, or is Waluigi actually the most popular Super Mario character right now?

Seriously, I’ve been a part of the gaming community for virtually all my life, and this still feels out of left field for me. Waluigi, the character that solely existed to give Wario a partner in the Mario sports games, is now the most requested character to enter Smash Bros. To be fair, I kind of get it. Waluigi is so underdeveloped in the Mario universe that he’s seen as an underdog, and the stuff we do know about him is prime internet meme material. I’m just surprised the guy got this popular this fast, but hey, here we are.

If you’re a newly minted Waluigi fan, you may thinking to yourself: what are the best games to play featuring the lanky purple villain? To help you on your search, I scraped the absolute bottom of the barrel to find the 10 best games that come the closest to doing Waluigi justice. I didn’t exactly have a ton of material to work with, but frankly, that’s Nintendo’s fault, not mine.

10: Mario Tennis

Waluigi Mario Tennis N64

Mario Tennis for the N64 is Waluigi’s debut title. It deserves its spot on the list for that reason alone, but the fact that it’s still fun today certainly helps its case.

Being that Waluigi was practically shoehorned into this game out of necessity, some might argue this is Waluigi’s worst iteration. But in a way, that could arguably make this Waluigi’s best iteration and one of the best Waluigi games.

9: Super Smash Bros Wii U / 3DS

Waluigi Super Smash Bros.

Despite all the demand to see Waluigi as a playable character in Smash Bros., the Wii U and 3DS editions of the franchises still rank as some of the best Waluigi games.

Not only is Waluigi an item in the form of the assist trophy, Mario and Luigi each get alternate costumes based on him. Sure, it’s not quite as good as playing as him. But for a guy predominately known for appearing in spin-off sports games, I consider this an exceptional amount of love.

8: Mario Superstar Baseball

Waluigi Mario Baseball

This is a real line of text in Mario Superstar Baseball about Waluigi:

The eggplant that his Liar Ball delivers is said to have the power to make those who touch it lose their lunches.

I don’t even know what else to say after that.

7: Mario Hoops 3 on 3

Mario Hoops Waluigi

Mario Hoops 3 on 3 is a pretty routine Mario sports spin-off, until you consider that it was developed by Final Fantasy creators Square Enix. As a result, classic characters from the original Final Fantasy make an appearance here.

In other words, if you stretch your logic thin enough, you could say Waluigi is the best Final Fantasy character.

6: Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour

Not only is Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour considered one of the best Mario Golf games, it also gives Waluigi a healthy amount of screen time with his wacky antics.

We can surmise from the game’s opening that Waluigi is awful at his short game, which I’m sure deeply resonates with any of us who have ever played miniature golf.

5: Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix

Waluigi Dance Dance Revolution Mario Mix

Even though Waluigi isn’t playable in this one, at least he’s an actual antagonist for once. We’re halfway finished the list right now and I’ll take whatever I can get at this point.

The best part about Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix is that Waluigi only really causes trouble as a side effect. He just wants to be really good at dancing. In my personal opinion, after seeing his moves in the game, I think he just needs to believe in himself more.

4: Mario Party 3

Waluigi Mario Party 3

Mario Party 3 is both one of the best Mario Party games and Waluigi’s debut in this subseries, which is surely no coincidence.

Also, let’s not forget that Waluigi not only gets into a fight with Bowser here, but he wins. Surely this is relevant to the Mario canon. Perhaps Waluigi is the key to all of this.

3: Mario Tennis Aces

Waluigi Mario Tennis Aces

Mario Tennis Aces is the latest Mario Tennis game, so naturally Waluigi makes his appearance on the roster.

Not only is Waluigi relevant to the plot (which we all know is very important in sports games), you can take him online and prove he is the king of tennis once and for all. That sounds crazy out of context, but at this point I fully expect the Waluigi fandom to want to fight for his honor.

2: Mario Kart DS

Waluigi Mario Kart DS

Mario Kart DS is considered one of the best Kart games ever, and it’s the only game to have both playable Waluigi along with the Waluigi Pinball track. Now that I think about it, why does Waluigi have a giant pinball table made in his likeness anyway?

I know none of the Mario Kart tracks ever make sense, but this stretches my suspension of belief even further than Rainbow Road does.

1: Mario Strikers Charged

Waluigi Crotch Chop

Mario Strikers Charged is the definitive title that established Waluigi’s charm and personality… and it all boils down to a rude victory dance.

That sounds silly even in the context of this list, but I don’t know how else to explain it. I can’t tell you why Waluigi celebrates victory with what is essentially a crotch chop, nor can I explain how this got approved by Nintendo to appear in a Mario game. But regardless of the reason why, we can see how Waluigi stands out among the cast of Mario characters. Whereas the main heroes are wholesome and squeaky clean, Waluigi is inexplicably vulgur. Sure, Wario has flatuence problems, but he’s not leading the denizens of the Mushroom Kingdom in a move that results in fines in the NFL.

Will Waluigi be playable in a Smash Bros. game, let alone in a title of his own? Who’s to say? While there are fangames out there that star Waluigi, they obviously aren’t the same as an official Nintendo licensed product. In a way, Waluigi might even be just as well off the less time he gets in the spotlight. We know so little about him that he could be practically anyone we want him to be, and the small morsels of character development are just enough to build our personal theories. If Waluigi did get his own game, could it possibly live up to the hype? So as much as I would have loved to close out this list with an actual Waluigi game, I also accept that the world just might not be ready for a dedicated game about him.

But hey, if Ridley can actually make it into Smash., I’d say anything is impossible for the lanky dude.
