Lady Gaga’s Michael Jackson collection is no bad romance.
Lady Gaga is well known for her unique fashion sense, but even she takes cues from the king of pop himself.
Okay, yes, Lady Gaga is a big Michael Jackson fan. But who isn’t, right? Despite what over a decade of controversy would lead you to believe, Jackson was loved by millions for his incredible variety of chart-topping hit songs. To this day, Thriller is the best selling album of all time, and that’s just scratching the surface of Jackson’s illustrious career.
But here’s the thing about Lady Gaga: she’s more than just a fan. She’s a fan who is also a celebrity with a lot of money, and you know what that means, right? I’ll assume the answer to that is “yes,” since what I’m about to tell you is right in the title of this article.
Yes, Lady Gaga is a huge collector of Michael Jackson memorabilia. Her passion was first made public in 2012, during an auction of over 1000 of Michael Jackson’s belongings in Beverly Hills, California. Most of the buyers at this event preferred to stay anonymous, but Lady Gaga took to Twitter shortly after to announce that she purchased 55 of the items.
“The 55 pieces I collected today will be archived & expertly cared for in the spirit & love of Michael Jackson,” the pop star wrote.
Among the pieces Lady Gaga nabbed include the iconic jacket from the “Bad” music video and a crystal glove. These two items alone have an estimated value exceeding $300,000, so you can only imagine the investment required to get all 55 items.
The crazy part is, Lady Gaga didn’t stop there. By 2016, she stated she had around 400 pieces of Michael Jackson memorabilia in total. All of these items are kept in an air conditioned storage to preserve their quality, which is an impressive amount of commitment to an already pricey collection.
This is probably why Lady Gaga considered opening a Michael Jackson museum back in 2014. That’s right, the title of this Celebrity Inventory wasn’t clickbait, it’s an idea taken directly from the “Poker Face” singer’s poker mouth. She considered setting up her display in Gary, Indiana, which is well known as the location of Jackson’s childhood home. The museum never materialized, but the jury’s undecided on why the concept never saw the light on day. Perhaps the legal team behind Jackson’s estate prohibited it, or maybe Lady Gaga herself lost the motivation or the drive to see the idea through. Your guess is as good as ours.
This isn’t to be confused with the mini Michael Jackson museum and gift shop located next to Jackson’s childhood home. Unless Lady Gaga kept her involvement really under the radar, she’s not connected to the museum in any way.
Regardless, Lady Gaga sets a fascinating precedent with her Michael Jackson collection. While many celebrities collect out of their own amusement or curiosity, Lady Gaga genuinely seems to want to preserve Michael Jackson’s legacy. Sure, maybe the museum idea fell through the cracks, but it’s the fact that she wanted to that counts. She has the collection, she has the dedication, and a museum is just a logical outcome of her preexisting passion. Besides, it only seems fitting that a pop star would want to preserve the memory of a former pop culture legend. After all, Michael Jackson was reportedly a big fan of Lady Gaga and even wanted to collaborate with her.
Though her museum unfortunately never came to pass, we can only wish Lady Gaga well in ensuring that this Celebrity Inventory stays preserved for generations to come. And if we see a new rising pop star with impeccable fashion taste start to collect Lady Gaga memorabilia in another 30 years or so, then we will have all but ensured that the legends of pop star icons will last forever.
