Collectible guitars recovered after theft from Manly West home

THIEVES who swiped a valuable collection of guitars signed by the likes of The Eagles rubbed signatures off some of the instruments and buried others under a Brisbane house.

Needless to say, the 81-year-old owner of a prized guitar collection was distraught when he noticed part of his collection had gone missing.  Leonard “Merv” French had 14 guitars stolen from him last month.  Assuming he’d never see the highly valuable guitars again, he received a call last week informing him that his missing guitars had been found, though not in their original state.

Rather than selling the $30,000 guitars, the thieves buried French’s guitars in the dirt and in the ceilings of homes in a nearby town.  Not only were the instruments damaged in the burial process, the offenders even erased some of the signatures off of the guitars, including John “Cougar” Mellencamp.  In doing so, they essentially “erased” thousands of dollars off the guitars as well.

French is now busy cleaning his guitars and looking for a more secure place to store his prized collection.
