This week we are featuring Efrain_r, one of our top users on Gemr! Efrain is from Florida and collects various Sailor Moon items as well as mermaids. To see more of his diverse collection, click here.
1. How did you first get into collecting?
I started collecting Sailor Moon items when I was eight years old (1998). My first ever completed collection consisted of all the VHS tapes which I finished in 2002. I worked hard as a kid so I could have money to buy my precious items. I only received $5 as my weekly allowance, so my parents really taught me to value hard work. When I was in middle school, I started collecting mermaid figurines, but I loved mermaids since I was in preschool.
2. Where do you usually go to find items to add to your collection?
My partner works at The Walt Disney Company so I buy everything related to The Little Mermaid at “The Art of Disney” and “The World of Disney” store at Disney Springs. Sometimes I will buy them from the online store. And of course, I receive a discount thanks to him. For my Sailor Moon items I go to Amazon, Yesasia, and CDjapan. Sometimes I will buy items on eBay, but I never buy anything at anime events. I usually tell my friends not to purchase items at anime conventions since they usually cost way more than the original price.
3. Which item is your absolute favorite?
This is hard for me to decide. Probably the Sailor Soldiers “Banpresto Girls Memories” figurines and the Disney Tradition “Dreaming Under the Sea”.
4. How much do you think your most valuable item is worth?
Well, probably The Little Mermaid snow globe and the rare Ursula “Deep Sea Diva” figurine from 2009. Ariel cost me $80 and Ursula was $65 when they were released a few years ago, but on they are selling for really ridiculous prices on eBay. Over $160+ for the Ariel snow globe and $200+ for the Ursula.
5. Would you ever consider selling your collection?
Of course I will. In a far away future (when I get really old), I may keep two or three precious mermaids since they carry a lot of feelings and memories of friends and family.
6. Do you go to events where you can meet people who collect?
Not often. Maybe if I participate more in anime conventions, then yes. It’s hard to find people close in my area who have the same hobby as me. It’s easy to find Sailor Moon fans at conventions but most Moonies I meet tend to avoid conversation. Maybe because I’m a guy and most moonies are girls. It’s easier to find people who have the same hobby online.
7. Do you think your collection will ever be “complete”?
Toei Animation frequently releases new Sailor Moon merchandise. I’m assuming it will never be completed. I want to focus more on figurines and rare items. The Disney Princess brands are still releasing new Ariel figurines every year so we’ll see what happens in the future.
8. Do your friends and co-workers know about your collectibles?
Most of my closest co-workers know that I love Sailor Moon, but they don’t know I collect them. I like social media better because it’s easier to find friends who have the same hobby as me. Actually, Gemr is one of my favorite websites as I’ve found many awesome new friends. Some of them I have added on Facebook and Twitter. I usually chat with them about a new item release or any news related to Sailor Moon and Ariel.
9. What is your “holy grail” item?
My holy grail item is the Sailor Moon Art Book Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 by Naoko Takeuchi. I love the two original volumes that I currently have. They’re very rare and I only need Vol. III, Vol. IV, Vol. V and Vol. Infinity to finish the set, but they are way too expensive (more than $300+ each)!
