With Godzilla King of the Monsters looming on the horizon, we are getting wrapped up in kaiju hype again! After Kong: Skull Island we’re positive Legendary learned and won’t repeat the problems we had with Godzilla (2014). They made a movie called Godzilla, that only featured a cameo from our favorite kaiju. They also billed the movie as starring Bryan Cranston but killed him off really early on.
That’s not what this article is about, so we’re going to take a breath. We might still be a little bitter about the whole thing. BUT, Legendary has been hinting Godzilla King of the Monsters is going to be loaded with kaiju from front to back. A promise that includes Godzilla’s arch enemy — and that’s something we can get behind. Every monster in this movie is kaiju royalty, so there better be a lot of screen time for all of them.
But which of these monsters holds the title of Godzilla’s arch enemy? After all, we’re getting a star-studded cast with Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, and Ghidorah. Oh yeah, and all the actors and actress’ as well. Legendary has lined up the biggest names in the Godzilla Universe for this one big show down. Every single contender packs enough firepower to level a city — and they will. We’re assuming half the plot is going to be drawing these enormous battling monsters out of city centers so they can battle away from the general populous. We’re also assuming this will be futile and at least one, if not multiple, cities will fall to this kaiju cage match.
So let’s start with Mothra and her longtime rivalry with Godzilla. She started out as the hero of her own film and has stayed a heroic figure throughout the Godzilla franchise. She is a guardian of people and places, and only appears in times of great need. Or that’s her usual backstory anyways. Mothra’s been a staple in the Godzilla franchise for years, and one we’re really excited to see her get a modern makeover. We’re wondering if they will include her usual enterage, or if Milli Bobby Brown will be filling that roll. We’re guessing there will be some sparing with Godzilla and Rodan, but in the end, she will be on the team that takes down Ghidorah. But, her status as a heroic figure among kaiju means she can’t be Godzilla’s nemesis.
Rodan is the next contender in the film, and he’s one of the most prolific kaiju in the Godzilla franchise. Just like Mothra he started out with his own film. Rodan was quickly pulled into the Godzilla-verse and never looked back. Many of his older appearances are cameos, which we would like to say is weird for a Kaiju, but see our above criticism of Godzilla (2014). Even so, much like Mothra, he took on a more heroic element after his introduction into the Godzilla-verse. Now he is usually on the “good” side of Kaiju matches — through a “good” monster is relative when you’re avoiding getting crushed. Given his heroic role, much like Mothra, you have to be guessing Godzilla’s true arch enemy.
That leaves just one contender…
Bryan Cranston — wait, they killed him off, scratch that. The golden three-headed dragon, King Ghidorah is Godzilla’s strongest nemisis and gets the title of arch enemy. Ghidorah is a positive force in one movie, out of the 8 he has currently appeared in (nine if you count the upcoming King of the Monsters). Which is sort of a bad track record if you ask us. His backstory has wavered between alien monster, to a mutated creature from the future. Most fans agree that he is one of the most powerful villains in the Godzilla franchise, and rightfully deserves a modern make over.
The brutal kaiju is going to be the prime contendar in this epic battle. His gravity beams and the gale force winds he can stir up with his wings will make devistate the compition. The details we have about King of the Monsters suggests that he disrupts electrical fields and will generate storms when he flies (which is a very cool addition to his lore). Monarch has been referring to him as Monster 0, and that says a lot about how powerful he’s going to be. While we don’t know his backstory yet, we will find out soon enough when the movie comes to theaters on May 31st. It is very likely it will take the combined forces of Godzilla, Rodan, and Mothra to take him down.
We hope we will see every monster square off (there are four of them, get it), before the end of the film. Until then, we will have to wait with bated breath for the next time Godzilla takes over theaters.
