Get gift ideas for the collectors in your life.

Christmas, as they say, is the most wonderful time of the year. The Christmas season, however, can feel like the most stressful time of the year.

How are you supposed to find gifts for everyone in your life? What happens when you know someone who already has everything? Many of us have friends and family who are passionate collectors of something… which makes gift shopping for them seem easy until you realize it isn’t. What if you buy something they already have? What if your present turns out to be really stupid and embarrassing because you aren’t familiar with what the person likes? Why have we as a society brought this cursed time upon ourselves in the name of sheer corporate commercialism!?

If you can relate to one or more of the above sentiments, then… well, first, take some deep breaths and remind yourself that you’ll get through this. Second, your friends at Gemr are here to help point you in the right direction. The following tips should help you find the perfect gift for all of the collectors in your life.

1: Study what they love

First things first: If you want to add to someone’s existing collection, then take some time to study what they collect.

This doesn’t have to be a massive undertaking, mind you. For example, if you know someone who collects comic books, then perhaps read up on some comic book news or even read a comic or two yourself. This will give you a better idea of what to look for, and when you do find that perfect gift, you’ll be able to bond with the recipient over it.

2: Find something obscure

Let’s face it: serious collectors probably have all the “easy to find” stuff in their collection already. Even if they don’t, then it’s just a matter of time before they spend a few minutes and a few dollars to change that.

If you can find a rare collectible, however, you strike a greater chance of meaningfully adding to a collection. Don’t go crazy with it, of course – no one’s expecting you to find a Honus Wagner card or anything. For example, if you’re looking to buy a Funko Pop! figure for someone, look for a “chase” pop that’s produced in limited quantities and is generally exclusive to a particular store.

3: Augment their collection

Okay, let’s say that you’re buying a gift for someone who literally has everything they’d want already. How are you supposed to add to a collection that can’t possibly be added to?

In these cases, perhaps you’d want to buy something that would help a collector keep or maintain their collection instead. For instance, a small display case or anything that could help organize a collection could go a long way. Alternatively, if there’s an appropriate subscription box service, you could consider buying a month of that instead.

4: When buying gift cards, think of their preferred vendor

At the end of the day, you might decide to opt for gift cards since you don’t have the time to find a perfect gift. There’s nothing wrong with this approach, but we’d still recommend you do a bit of homework.

For example, if you’re buying for someone who loves video games, then you’d naturally think to get a Gamestop gift card. However, your recipient might prefer digital storefronts, such as Steam or Nintendo’s eShop. Even generic venues such as Amazon can occasionally offer the best deals on certain items. To be fair, it’s hard to outright buy a bad gift card for someone, but doing your homework still helps in this case!

Friends

5: Share what you love with them instead.

Here’s a radical idea: what if the best gift for someone isn’t something they already collect? What if, instead, you use the holiday season as an opportunity to share the love of your collection instead?

It almost makes too much sense. If you collect something, then you’re already an expert on that thing. You know what would be the best fit for every friend and family member you’d buy for. And as a bonus, you’d even be supporting an industry you already love! Christmas presents shouldn’t just be arbitrary gifts that you buy out of some cultural obligation. Even if you don’t buy the fanciest gift someone always wanted, the gift that helps you form a deeper connection with someone is the best gift of them all.

The holidays will come and go, but the people in your life are there to stay. Well, in an emotional sense at any rate. If Uncle Robbie is still at your parents’ place the morning after, then perhaps the best gift of all might be an Uber ride home instead.
