Force Friday Header

May the Force Friday be with you (and your smartphone).

Looking to bolster your Star Wars collection? If you aren’t, the upcoming Force Friday event might convince you otherwise.

The weekend of September 1st through September 3rd is the official kickoff day of the Force Friday II event. The first Force Friday event, held back in 2015, helped hype the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens with special promotional unboxings of new Star Wars toys and merchandise. This year’s event is of course being held to promote Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but the formula’s changed a bit since last year. Not only will tons of new Star Wars toys be newly released around the world, fans will be encouraged to visit participating locations to play a new augmented reality game.

“Find the Force” will be accessible from your smartphone via the official Star Wars app. Once downloaded, you’ll want to go to select stores with Star Wars displays featuring the “Find the Force” logo. Scan the logo with the app, and augmented reality versions of select Star Wars characters will come alive on your phone. Naturally, you’ll have social options to take pictures and videos, but you’ll also unlock new features within the app as well. Each newly scanned character will unlock a “data chip,” which will feature promotional material and other digital collectibles.

A new character from the movie is slated to be revealed via the app on the first day of the event. Displays can also be scanned again each day of the event to unlock up to 15 data chips total. Those who are feeling lucky can also upload their photos and videos to Twitter for a chance to win a private Lucasfilms tour in San Francisco and a trip to the world premiere of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. If you want to participate, just remember to use the hashtags “#findtheforce” and “#sweepstakes”.

Overall, while the “Find the Force” game doesn’t add much to Force Friday, it does give some spice to the weekend event. If nothing else, it provides everyone an excuse to go to brick and mortar locations to shop for new Star Wars stuff. Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres on December 15th, so expect lots more Star Wars hype on the horizon in the coming months.
