Okay, We Admit it. All Disney Songs are Great!

Well, we gave it a good natured Disney try, held hands, and chanted Hakuna Matata, but we just couldn’t do it! We attempted to rank the best Disney songs of all time, but we failed. Each song is delightfully charming and wonderful and (dare we say it?) epic in its own right. Choosing a favorite song from Disney’s vast catalogue was impossible, so we settled on a ten-way tie!

The sole caveat we had was that only one song per movie could be represented. Even Princesses have royal rules to follow! This prevented a few movies from taking over the list. Did we include your favorite earworm? Head over to the Disney Club and let us know if we missed your fave! Without further ado…we present you with the following:

The Lion King – Circle of Life

We dare you to find another opening song more sublime than The Lion King’s “Circle of Life.” The second the music starts, the listener is instantly transported to the savannah. This is the only song on our list not sung by a character in the movie, but we absolutely could not have a Top 10 list and not include one of the most recognizable songs from Disney canon.

Beauty and the Beast – Be Our Guest

Disney lore has it that the live action reboot of Beauty and the Beast wasn’t supposed to be a musical – can you even imagine? – but this one phenomenal song changed everyone’s mind. Thank goodness! Originally recorded by Jerry Orbach and Angela Lansbury in 1991, the upbeat song became an instant favorite. Lumiere sings “dinner here is never second best,” and we have to agree — this tune certainly is tops!

Mulan – Reflection

Oh, excuse us! We weren’t gently weeping because Christina Aguilera singing “Reflection” from Mulan gives us a big ol’ bowl of Honey Nut Feel-ios. It’s not like the line “If I were truly to be myself, I would break my family’s heart” really hits home or anything. Aww geez, a Disney ballad about not being perfect and the desire to be true to yourself? It’s on heavy rotation around these parts.

Frozen – Let it Go

Let it go! Let it GOOOOOO! Nope — we can’t! This Oscar and Emmy award winning song is frozen on this list and here to stay! Idina Menzel belted it out in 2013, and now we can emote right along with her for the rest of eternity. It truly is a solid new classic that we can’t get out of our heads…or hearts. Awww. The sassy Queen Elsa has a place in our top 10, without hesitation!

The Little Mermaid – Under the Sea

Altogether now: “Darling it’s better, down where it’s wetter!” If Prince Eric weren’t so dreamy, we would absolutely take Sebastian’s advice and never leave the sea! Arguably The Little Mermaid’s most iconic song, it has us convinced to live carefree where “the sturgeon an’ the ray, they get the urge ‘n’ start to play.” You could have two left feet – or a tail – and still dance along to this calypso-inspired tune.

The Jungle Book – The Bare Necessities

The original 1967 version is so wonderfully uplifting that it brought a tear to our eye (anyone have tissues?) when Baloo whistled the tune in the live action remake. We’ll take note from the joyous bear and let the “bear” necessities of life come to us. How great is this song? Well, it was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song — so pretty darned good.

Pocahontas – Colors of the Wind

Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon? Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned? What we really mean to say is: can you paint with all the colors of the wind? Pocahontas chastises John Smith in a beautiful song sung by fan favorite Vanessa Williams in 1995’s insta classic, Pocahontas. A blue corn moon isn’t even a real thing, but we’ll for real put it on our Top 10.

Aladdin – Friend Like Me

“Friend Like Me” has been a staple at every dance recital ever since it’s debut in 1992. What better way to showcase your flexibility and penchant for sequin harem pants than with a little tribute to Robin Williams’ manic lyrical flow? We predict this evergreen song to be gracing the pages of recital playbills for many years to come.

Moana – You’re Welcome

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson can raise one mighty fine singular eyebrow AND deftly handle a whimsical Disney tune? Is there anything this man can’t accomplish with his smouldering charm? Maui might be responsible for creating basically everything (and then screwing it up), but Dwayne Johnson certainly delivers on this musical number. What can we say except THANK YOU!

Cinderella – Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo

For this entry we went way back to one of the originators of Disney magic, the timeless classic Cinderella. Without the Fairy Godmother there would be no fairytale ending, so we have to give our final slot to perennial favorite: “Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo”! We can’t promise you a Prince Charming, but we can promise you’ll adore all the songs on our list. And we also promise you’ll be humming a few of these to yourself for the rest of the day!
